Create seamless patterns on your iPhone with Patterns (iOS 7)

IconWith the release of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X7, comes a brand new FREE app from Corel for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Patterns.

I am a graphic designer, and this new app has been fascinating to work with. It is an app that simplifies the complexity of seamless patterns at the touch of a few gestures.

In this era of touch devices, the Patterns app integrates seamlessly with the Corel Content Exchange, and it is as easy as it could be to use in a daily workflow. Let’s go through the app in detail, from installation to interface, usability and integration with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X7.

How to customize the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X7 UI to make it your own

Have you ever cooked in someone else’s kitchen? Opening and closing drawers looking for a spatula, walking around in circles trying to find the salt, and wondering where to put the garbage. It’s always in the last place you look.  For a cook, there’s nothing as comfortable as cooking in your own kitchen. You have organized your kitchen in a manner that makes sense to you; your favorite tools are at your fingertips, and you can focus on your craft rather than your workspace.  With CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X7, customizing your workspace to make it your own has never been easier.

When I was putting together my cookbook, Criollo: A taste of Venezuela, in CorelDRAW I realized I was using certain tools and dockers frequently. So, customizing them to be readily available only made sense. However, during the year it took me to put the cookbook together, I was also working on other projects. One of the things I love the most about CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X7 is that creating and switching between customized workspaces is easy and fast.

CorelDRAW and MacOS – an update

Since my previous post regarding running CorelDRAW on Apple Macintosh computers, it’s been interesting that this topic continues to stir up conversation – it continues to be part of our ongoing internal discussions and longer term strategic reviews. So let me go straight to the point: Corel is not currently working on a native MacOS version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, and therefore the upcoming new version of our graphics offering will remain Windows-based.

As many of you know, our goal is to provide the best possible solution to our customers around the world and to offer a choice, allowing users to determine whether to purchase a perpetual license or look into our subscription option. We also know that many Adobe CS users are frustrated with the whole Creative Cloud approach, and some are looking for alternatives. To answer their requirements, we are for example providing options in CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT to customize the workspaces with a look and behavior similar to Adobe products (and are making this even easier in the upcoming version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite). At the same time, we need to put a priority towards answering the needs of the existing CorelDRAW users and audiences.

But when it comes to develop all new software for MacOS (we understand it shouldn’t just be a port of the Windows software), the reality is, it would require at least a full cycle of development where we wouldn’t be able to do anything for our Windows users. Although it is not the ideal solution, we do have some users running CorelDRAW Graphics on a Mac using Parallels or Bootcamp, and we are making sure to include Macintosh hardware in our internal testing.

We do take the discussion about this very seriously and continuously monitor the market share of the different operating systems in order to focus our teams for future development of CorelDRAW. We’re committed to delivering the best possible experience for our users, and therefore need to focus our investments & resources on serving the Windows platform for software like CorelDRAW Graphics Suite at this stage. While we’re not currently working on a Mac version of the suite, we continue to monitor the market trends and listen to the conversation for any factor that would change our current direction.

We are constantly expanding into new areas like mobile integration, better content management and new cloud-based services. We are also continuing to make sure CorelDRAW works as well as possible on Apple hardware through Apple’s own BootCamp and Parallels. There’s definitely a lot of exciting stuff on the way!

PS: If anyone can recommend a development shop that would be willing to create a Mac version and share on the success of a CorelDRAW-based product on the Apple platform, please get them to contact me directly.

How Corel helps educators stay creative without breaking the bank

We all know how important technology is to education. Schools and other educational institutions have relied on technology, including creative software, for years. It is impossible to put together a curriculum, collaborate and keep students engaged without the use of technology.

Unfortunately, education budgets have not increased at the same rate as the price of this technology. To make matters worse, many software companies have moved to strictly cloud-based purchase options, forcing customers to pay more overtime and only allowing them to rent the software. This is where Corel comes in.

Corel recently signed an agreement with the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) to provide significant discounts on creative software to education institutions, helping them to stay within budget. The agreement also includes the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).

CorelDRAW Windows XP and Vista support going forward

When it comes to supporting the different flavours of Windows, one of the key decision factor is around what CorelDRAW users have and are expected to have going forward. In addition, as we look at new versions of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, we also want to make sure we provide the best possible experience to users around the world by leveraging the latest functionality provided by the operating system.

Keeping track of the latest Market Share data available, we’ve seen a consistent decline of Windows XP over the last 2 years, with the latest numbers showing the 11 years old operating system to have fallen under 29% of all computers world-wide, with Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 taking over. Looking at the visitors on CorelDRAW.com, the XP visitors represent 20% of the total traffic and is in rapid decline. Steam shows, in its December 2013 report, that XP now represents less than 6.5% of the gaming computers used on the service.

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows XP in early April 2014. After that date, Microsoft will stop releasing updates and security fixes for the Operating System they released over 11 years ago. In addition, Windows XP and Windows Vista will not benefit from the latest enhancements to the Windows platform going forward.

Based on the “end of support” policy from Microsoft around Windows XP and the fact that the vast majority of the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite users are today already on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, we will deliver the best possible experience on these two versions of the Microsoft Operating System, in both 32- and 64-bit, going forward. Starting with the next major release of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, the supported operating systems will, therefore, be Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 with the latest updates and service packs installed. For those who want to remain on Windows XP once Microsoft stops providing security updates, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 will continue to work perfectly.

‘Tis the season to give back

Season's GreetingsWe are in the midst of a very busy time of year: preparing for the holidays and shopping for family and friends (and perhaps ourselves, while we’re at it!). But amidst the mall crowds and parking-lot gridlock, we should also use this time to think about those in need.

Here at Corel, we make it a priority to give back to our community, both at the global and local levels. We have a diverse group of employees, and this is evident in the variety of initiatives we support.

You may have heard about our Corel Cares program, where we provide educational opportunities to children all over the world. That isn’t the only way in which we give back. We continue to support many initiatives close to the hearts of our employees:

Did you know that there is a CorelDRAW product specifically for the decorated apparel business?

This post was originally published on Wilcom’s blog

Corel and Wilcom have joined forces to bring you Wilcom DecoStudio e3 which combines the strengths of CorelDRAW Graphic Suite and Wilcom embroidery software, in an easy and intuitive way. If you offer custom t-shirt printing or ad specialties, you quite possibly also offer embroidery. With Wilcom DecoStudio e3 you can do all this in-house without the costs and time delays involved in outsourcing to a third party.

DecoStudio e3 is designed for screen printers or apparel decorators who aren’t embroidery experts, and simply want to stream line their processes and save time and money. The best part is, DecoStudio is fully integrated with CorelDRAW so you don’t need to have two different applications open, and because you’re working in familiar territory it’s super easy to learn.

It’s not just for embroidery though! With the Rhinestone design tool, Product Visualizer and the new Virtual Decoration option, you will find DecoStudio – with CorelDRAW – to be a valuable tool for all your garment decoration processes.

Homemade Holiday Gift Ideas: Calendars

The holiday season is coming and everyone is on the lookout for the perfect present for a friend or a loved one. Did you think of creating a custom present? Creating a calendar is an easy project with PaintShop Pro and you can either print it at home, or go to a local print shop for a more professional result (or simply a different size than what your printer can do). You can choose to display photos of the kids for grandma to enjoy, or photos of cars from the antique car show for Cousin Frank.

There are different types of calendars and they can take on varied format. You can have a calendar that shows the whole year below a single photo montage, or you can have different photos for each month. You can have the dates printed directely onto the page, or on a separate page. The possibilities are numerous which also means that you can create different presents using the same photos, collages, or scrapbook layouts. Although you can do everything from scratch, you might want to look into the numerous supplies available in digital scrapbook sites.

Let’s have a look at a simple way to create your own custom calendar in 6 steps:
